Removal of a giant tumor of the right anterior clinoid

A 47-year-old man from Aktobe Region had been suffering from severe headaches for two months. Over time, the intensity of the pain increased, and his vision began to deteriorate sharply. Concerned about his condition, he sought medical assistance from specialists. An MRI scan revealed a giant tumor of the right anterior clinoid process with pronounced perifocal edema. The tumor measured 5.11 × 4.82 cm and was located near the optic nerve, chiasm, and major cerebral vessels. Its location made it particularly dangerous, compressing the visual pathways and threatening further vision loss, potentially affecting cognitive and motor functions and leading to severe disability.
The case was thoroughly reviewed at a clinical conference of the Brain Pathology Neurosurgery Department, with the participation of the department head, Professor Nurzhan Amirbekovich Rysgeldiyev. Based on the multidisciplinary discussion, it was decided to perform surgery at the National Center for Neurosurgery.
The patient was admitted to the Center in Astana under the Mandatory Social Health Insurance (OSMS) program. A five-hour microsurgical operation using modern neuronavigation was performed. The surgical team, led by Professor Rysgeldiyev and neurosurgeon Dr. Aidoss Moldabekov, successfully removed the giant tumor.
The surgery was successful. The patient has now been transferred to a ward, with rehabilitation ahead. He already reports significant improvement: the headaches have subsided, and his overall condition has markedly improved.
The patient expressed immense relief and gratitude toward the medical team: “The doctors saved me from severe disability and literally gave me a new life.”
Currently, the patient retains vision in his left eye, while vision in the right eye is nearly absent; however, treatment and rehabilitation continue.
