The baby's parents noticed the first signs of the disease after the baby's pronounced anxiety and lethargy, in addition, the baby had an increase in the size of the head and a bulging of a large fontanel. The baby's mother had a consultation of a neurologist. Further, neurosonography and CT scan of the brain , which revealed signs of hydrocephalus, a volumetric formation of the right lateral ventricle of the brain in the stage of moderate clinical decompensation. The first operation "ventriculoperitoneal shunting on the left" was performed on the baby in the City Children's Clinical Hospital No. 2 in Almaty. The second operation at the consultation of doctors was planned at the National Center for Neurosurgery.
As the head of the Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery G.I. Olenbay notes, the complexity of the operation was that the tumor was located in a functionally important area, large enough (4 * 3 cm) for such a child's age. In addition, there was a high risk of operative blood loss, which could lead to severe complications, up to death. The tumor was congenital and formed in a child in the womb, which in itself is considered a rare occurrence.
“We performed microsurgical intervention, removal of an intraventricular tumor of the posterior horn of the right lateral ventricle, in which all modern techniques were used. Also an important role in the success of the operation was played by the high qualification of the personnel and the equipment of the operating unit of our Center. Under the control of the neurosurgical navigation system, we were able to reach the tumor with pinpoint precision and remove it completely. At the moment, the baby is undergoing postoperative treatment and is in the ward with her mother,” said neurosurgeon G.I. Olenbay.
Separately, it is worth noting the high professionalism of anesthesiologists. An operation at such a tiny age is always accompanied by great difficulties in applying anesthesia. Careful control of blood and respiration, extremely scrupulous calculation of anesthesia, huge responsibility for the child's life - all this lay on the shoulders of the multidisciplinary team of the Neurosurgery Center.
The operation was performed by a neurosurgeon of the highest qualification category, head of the Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery, Professor of JSC "NCN" - Olenbai Gabit Ilyasovich, as well as a neurosurgeon - Seitbekov Saparbek Bazarbaevich. Also, the operation was accompanied by an anesthesiologist-resuscitator Zhandeldinova Aigul Kairovna, a transfusiologist - Kuanyshev Erbol and an operating nurse Rakhmatullaevna Madina. The operation took place on a quota basis, within the framework of the OSMS.
