Removal of a brain tumor in a woman at the 29th week of pregnancy

Doctors of the National Center for Neurosurgery performed a complex surgery to remove a brain tumor at the 29th week of pregnancy of woman from Almaty.In September of this year, a woman consulted doctors at her place of residence due to complaints of numbness in the left half of her face, headaches and weakness. Doctors performed an MRI of the brain on the patient, which revealed a volumetric neoplasm of the brain.
Taking into account the serious condition of the patient and the high risk of further complications, the doctors of the Center for Neurosurgery, headed by the chief neurosurgeon of the country, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan Prof. Serik Akshulakov, decided to urgently hospitalize her by air ambulance to the National Center for Neurosurgery.
The pregnant woman underwent a microsurgical operation to remove a tumor of the cerebellopontine angle on the left using neuromonitoring. The complexity of the operation was that the tumor was located close to the brain stem, where all the vital centers of the brain are located, in case of damage to any centers of the patient, it could paralyze the patient, or even turn into a fatal outcome.
The operation lasted about 5 hours and was successful. The operation was performed free of charge, within the framework of the state social insurance. Today, the expectant mother feels well, she was transferred to the ward. Despite the complex operation, the woman continues to bear the child.
The operation was performed by Professor Serik Akshulakov, neurosurgeons of the Department of Brain Neurosurgery - Aidos Moldabekov and Dauren Zhaksybaev. In addition, a multidisciplinary team of doctors worked during the operation, which included the most experienced anesthesiologists, neurophysiologists, obstetricians and gynecologists.
