Removal of a large cystic neoplasm in a woman at 6.5 months of pregnancyDuring the pregnancy, a young woman from the Turkestan region began to complain of frequent headaches, vomiting, and cramps. Doctors ordered an MRI of the brain, which revealed a large cystic neoplasm. This case was discussed at a consultation of doctors at the National Center for Neurosurgery, where a decision was made to surgically treat the pregnant woman in the conditions of the Neurosurgery Center. The woman was taken to the Center via air ambulance and was operated on by the best specialists of the National Center.
As NCN Professor, Head of the Department of Neurosurgery and Brain Pathology Dr. Nurzhan Ryskeldiev notes, sometimes it is during pregnancy that doctors identify the most serious diseases in the expectant mother.
“Our center performs operations on pregnant women with complex brain diagnoses, including benign and malignant tumors. But if until recently this was a reason to terminate a pregnancy, now the situation has changed radically. At the National Center for Neurosurgery, there are quite often cases when pregnant women are admitted for surgery and after the operation they continue to bear a child. There were also several cases, even when childbirth was delivered in our Center, that is, simultaneous operations when two teams of neurosurgeons and obstetricians worked together” - noted Dr. Nurzhan Ryskeldiev.
“This patient was diagnosed with a large cystic-solid neoplasm of the right hemisphere of the cerebellum with compression of the brain stem. The size of the cyst reached 5 cm * 3.5 cm. The cyst was compressing the brain, and accordingly this affected the patient’s condition. We performed a microsurgical operation - removal of the cyst using neuronavigation. The operation was successful, the condition improved, all functional and motor abilities were preserved, the patient continues to bear the child and is preparing for discharge.” - shared the patient’s attending physician, neurosurgeon Dr. Muratbek Tleubergenov.
The operation was performed on the patient for free as part of the compulsory medical insurance. The operation was performed by the head of the Department of Neurosurgery for Brain Pathology Dr. Ryskeldiev, neurosurgeon Dr. Tleubergenov, anesthesiologist Dr. Tokshekenova, nurse anesthesiologist A.S. Karieva, operating room nurse D.M. Muratov. It is worth noting that more than 4,500 operations are performed annually at the National Center for Neurosurgery, of which 90% of operations are performed within the framework of compulsory medical insurance.
