Simultaneously: neurosurgeons removed the brain tumor, while obstetricians-gynecologists carried out a cesarean section

During the intervention, two complex procedures were performed simultaneously: neurosurgeons removed the brain tumor, while obstetricians-gynecologists carried out a cesarean section and delivered the baby. This is the fifth such case in the practice of the National Center for Neurosurgery.

The patient was airlifted to the Center at 34 weeks of pregnancy. The operation was successful, and the newborn was transferred to the Center for Motherhood and Childhood for further examination.

In the Center’s practice, neurosurgical diagnoses in pregnant women are accompanied by various clinical situations. A total of 26 such cases have been recorded. In several instances, brain and spinal surgeries were performed in the early stages of pregnancy. Following surgical treatment, the women continued their pregnancies to full term and safely delivered their babies.

In addition, 17 patients underwent neurosurgical treatment during the postpartum period.

It is worth noting that the first simultaneous operation at the Center was performed in 2008. At that time, a young woman expecting her first child was admitted in critical condition with a diagnosis of arteriovenous malformation and in a coma. She underwent emergency surgery, during which both a neurosurgical procedure and a cesarean section were performed simultaneously.

Today, that patient is a happy mother of three children.

Such operations require a high level of professionalism and coordinated teamwork by a multidisciplinary team. Currently, the young mother’s condition remains under continuous supervision by neurosurgeons.
