The first signs of illness in a 14-year-old patient appeared in June of this year, when the boy complained of lower back pain. Initially, his parents did not pay much attention. However, when he began experiencing muscle spasms, weakness, numbness, and burning sensations in his legs, they sought medical care and underwent diagnostic tests. At the regional hospital in Petropavlovsk, the patient was found to have a spinal mass measuring 4.2 × 3.5 × 3.5 cm. After consultations between Petropavlovsk neurosurgeons and our specialists, it was decided to perform surgery at the National Center for Neurosurgery. By the time he was admitted, the boy was unable to walk.
Neurosurgeons from the Pediatric Neurosurgery Department performed transpedicular fixation of the vertebrae and microsurgical removal of the tumor from the L3 vertebra. The six-hour surgery was successful. Immediately following the procedure, the patient noted significant improvement: his lower back pain disappeared, and he was able to walk around the ward.
The boy’s mother expressed gratitude to the medical team, highlighting the high level of care and the excellent conditions at the Center. She also emphasized that the treatment was provided free of charge under the Mandatory Social Health Insurance (OSMS).
